Ephesians 2

Made Alive in Christ

1 And
Lit being
you
I.e., Gentile believers
were cdead
Or by reason of
in your offenses and sins,
2in which you epreviously walked according to the
Lit age
course of gthis world, according to hthe prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in ithe
I.e., people opposed to God
sons of disobedience.
3Among them
I.e., Jewish believers
we too all lpreviously lived in mthe lusts of our flesh,
Lit doing
indulging the desires of the flesh and of the
Lit thoughts
mind, and were pby nature qchildren of wrath, rjust as the rest.
4But God, being srich in mercy, because of tHis great love with which He loved us, 5even when we were udead
Or by reason of
in our wrongdoings, made us alive together
Two early mss in Christ
with Christ ( xby grace you have been saved),
6and yraised us up with Him, and zseated us with Him in aathe heavenly places in abChrist Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come He might show the
Lit surpassing
boundless adriches of His grace in aekindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8For afby grace you have been saved agthrough faith; and
I.e., this salvation
this is not of yourselves, it is aithe gift of God;
9 ajnot a result of works, so that akno one may boast. 10For we are His workmanship, alcreated in amChrist Jesus for angood works, which God aoprepared beforehand so that we would apwalk in them.

11 Therefore remember that aqpreviously aryou, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are calledasUncircumcision” by the so-calledatCircumcisionwhich is performed in the flesh by human hands-- 12remember that you were at that time separate from Christ,
Or alienated
,
avexcluded from
Or citizenship in Israel
the people of Israel, and strangers to axthe covenants of the promise, having ayno hope and azwithout God in the world.
13But now in baChrist Jesus you who bbpreviously were bcfar away
Lit became; or were made
have bebeen brought near
Or in
,
bgby the blood of Christ.
14For He Himself is bhour peace, biwho made both groups into one and broke down the
Lit the dividing wall of the barrier
barrier of the dividing wall,
15
Or the hostility, by abolishing in His flesh the Law
by blabolishing
I.e., by His death
in His flesh the hostility, which is bnthe Law composed of commandments expressed in ordinances, so that in Himself He might
Lit create
,
bpmake the two bqone new person, in this way establishing brpeace;
16and that He might bsreconcile them both in btone body to God through the cross,
Or in Himself
by it having bvput to death the hostility.
17And bwHe came and preached bxpeace to you who were byfar away, and peace to those who were bznear; 18for through Him we both have caour access in cbone Spirit to ccthe Father. 19So then you are no longer cdstrangers and foreigners, but you are cefellow citizens with the
Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people
saints, and are of cgGod’s household,
20having been chbuilt on cithe foundation of cjthe apostles and prophets, ckChrist Jesus Himself being the clcornerstone, 21 cmin whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into cna holy
Or sanctuary
temple in the Lord,
22in whom you also are being cpbuilt together into a cqdwelling of God in the Spirit.
